Between 1984 and 1989, when the global economy was booming, Porsche had the right performance car to steal people’s hearts and wallets — the 911 3.2 Carrera.
The 911 3.2 Carrera featured the stunning aesthetics of a 911 Turbo, one of the largest displacement air-cooled engines in Porsche 911 history, renowned reliability and a relatively affordable price tag. No wonder a record 76,473 of these dream machines were sold!
Powered by an air-cooled 3.2-liter horizontally opposed flat-six engine that produces 231 bhp and 284 Nm of torque, the 911 3.2 Carrera accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in about 5.7 seconds and delivers a top speed of 150 mph (242 km/h). It roars at a somewhat lower pitch than 911s of the past and delivers more linear power throughout the rpm range in place of whiplash inducing peakiness. Fuel efficiency is surprisingly good, thanks to a Bosch Motronic 2 engine management system that controls the ignition system and fuel injection system (Bosch LE-Jetronic). Motronic 2 also cuts off the fuel supply whenever you release the accelerator pedal to further reduce fuel consumption.
The 5-speed manual Getrag G50 gearbox introduced in 1987 features a hydraulic clutch, as well as smoother shifting and a shorter shift lever than on earlier 911 3.2 Carreras. This is one of the reasons later models are more popular than earlier models now.
The interior is classic 911 with supportive sports seats and minimal embellishments beyond the usual five gauges designed to keep you clearly informed and less likely to become carried away with the accelerator pedal. Inside, as well as outside, everything is handbuilt and the craftsmanship is impressive. There are no standard airbags or anti-lock brakes, but the steering column has a safety design, the body crumples and big bumpers prevent damage up to 5mph.
Handling is excellent with somewhat heavy steering that provides well-defined feedback. The ride is taut but comfortable courtesy of standard Boge dampers that are softer than available sporty Bilsteins. The fully independent suspension with torsion bars and anti-roll bars is pretty much the same suspension used on all Porsche 911s from 1963 to 1989. Four large servo-assisted disc brakes support controlled deceleration even at high speeds with effective heat dissipation.
