Welcome to the wonderful world of Kei vehicles!
After the Second World War there were little resources in war-torn countries that needed to rebuild. Small and cheap cars for daily use were highly sought after. Germany gave the world the VW beetle, and Japan brought us the Kei!
Early Kei vehicles were even smaller than they are today with an engine displacement of 330cc or less! As they still are today, Kei trucks were workhorses on the farm, at construction sites, at fish markets, on golf courses, and for every tradesman imaginable. As average households began to prosper post-war, Kei vans and cars were produced to meet the demands of families across the country.
From 1990, the restrictions were modified for Kei vehicles and 660cc engines became legal. The Japanese auto makers didn’t stop there as they added turbos, intercoolers, multi-valve engines, safety features, and all the comforts of a family sedan. Certain tax and insurance regulations make them much cheaper to run than regular vehicles in Japan as well. Whether hauling or hunting, racing or shopping there is a Kei made for every need.
The Kei was the start of Japan’s growth into an international auto manufacturing powerhouse. However, the vehicles that brought on this auto revolution were only manufactured for the Japanese market. As a result JDM and Kei fans are importing these unique and reliable machines. Markets like Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the US are loving Kei engineering, performance, and design.
When looking for a Kei to import you will find that the companies that pioneered Kei technology still run the show today. Suzuki has produced over 20 models of Kei vehicles over the years, including the Carry Truck, Every Wagon van, and the high-performance Alto Works to name a few. Suzuki still produces spare parts for older models making for cheap and easy repairs. Daihatsu (Toyota) is known for power and class, producing 30 models over the years. Their showpieces include the Hijet truck, Atrai van. and Mira TR-XX Avanzato. Mitsubishi, Honda, and Subaru all have amazing machines of their own too!
