2002 Impreza WRX STi Spec C Type RA
Sold and Exported
The 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type RA Spec C is one serious performance machine with handling and acceleration that rival some of the world’s fastest production vehicles.
“WRX” (World Rally Cross*) tells you it was rally inspired with a high-performance turbocharged engine, stiff suspension and AWD. “STi” (Subaru Tecnica International) assures you it was only released in Japan and features an engine, transmission and suspension specially tuned by Subaru’s in-house tuner. “Type RA” (Rally Applicant) indicates it was specially stripped down to lower weight and improve performance. “Spec C” conveys an extra level of performance refinement. And “Bugeye” headlights reveal this was an early model from Impreza’s popular second generation, which featured an especially stiff chassis and powerful engine.
STi Imprezas are popular among enthusiasts and private rally teams importing vehicles from Japan, and the Type RA version is particularly appealing because of its higher performance. In 2002 models, the Type RA offers not only lighter weight, but also a closer ratio gearbox, sharper steering, a rally-car roof vent above the driver, and a mechanical Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) with more effective performance than the standard viscous-coupling center LSD.
The exclusive Spec C version further enhances performance by adding such refinements as larger inlet ports, more aggressive cams, lighter windows, lighter hood and roof panels, and better handling around corners thanks to an increased caster angle and faster steering rack.
Power is delivered explosively by a turbocharged 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder EJ207 engine that was originally developed for JDM homologation models. Thanks to an official 276 hp with actual performance closer to 300 hp, it propels you from 0-60 mph in about 5.1 seconds. With a little tuning, enthusiasts can easily raise the horsepower beyond 400 hp.
The engine’s “boxer” configuration lowers the center of gravity and produces a very distinctive rumble loved by motorsports fans. Variable Valve Timing (AVCS) contributes to higher torque at low revolutions (384 Nm at 4400 rpm) while a large intercooler and hood scoop keep things running fast and cool. The redline on the speedometer extends from 8000 to 9000 rpm and top vehicle speed is 160 mph (257.4 km/h).
This 2002 Impreza WRX STi Type RA Spec C was kept in pristine condition by its single proud owner in Japan. Apart from an aftermarket muffler, EVC boost controller and Prova rear spoiler, it is fully stock with features like large gold wheels, Nardi three-spoke steering wheel, ventilated Brembos and a 6-speed manual transmission.
