This beautiful Alto Works may be red, white and blue, but it’s JDM through and through. Perfect age for import to Australia and the USA.
Of all the used vehicles available in Japan, I think you’ll agree that turbocharged kei cars are among the most captivating ¬— and the Suzuki Alto Works is without a doubt one of the greatest turbocharged kei cars of all time.
Skeptics may scoff at the idea of a “works” minicar, but the Suzuki Alto Works was genuinely race-ready from the factory with a super light body, full-time 4WD and jaw-dropping redline (7,000 to 9,500 rpm depending on model and year). Talk about rev happy!
Suzuki boosted the Alto Works’ already peppy inline-three 547cc engine with twin cams, 12 valves, electronic fuel injection, an intercooled turbocharger and more to give this 650kg pocket rocket exhilarating response far beyond expectation.
64 PS may not sound like much, but it’s the maximum allowed for kei cars in Japan and you can easily double it with minimal modification. Whether you keep it stock or tune it like crazy, there’s more than enough power because the vehicle is so incredibly lightweight. A 5-speed manual gearbox transmits power to all four wheels for excellent traction and handling that hugs the road. Hopefully one of these days my friend will lighten up and let me test its limits.
While reminiscent of a competition go-kart in size and thrills, the Alto Works offers solid Suzuki reliability and surprisingly ample space for everyday shopping and commuting. The JDM 1988 Alto Works Type One is high on the wish list of many kei car enthusiasts, but we can still source this model in Japan for a highly reasonable price!
If you like Suzukis and want just as much fun off the road as the Alto Works supplies on the road, take a look at this 1992 Suzuki Jimny we sourced and shipped abroad. You can be sure the owner is enjoying himself on weekends.
