High Tech Muscle and Bang for the Buck: Lancer Evolution All the Way If you want a used Japanese supercar from the ‘90s (which can now be imported to the USA) that gives you reliable low five (or even sub five!) second 0-60 times, you’ve got three really good choices: The Toyota Celica GT-Four, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. I call these cars the “244T” cars. They’ve got 2-liter, 4-cylinder engines, 4-wheel-drive, and are Turbo charged. So in my car world they are the 244T class. And a stunning class of performance vehicles they are, just stunning. These cars are all relatively light, with the GT-Four being the heaviest at 1,380kg, and with the lighter examples of the STi and the Evo coming in at under 1,300kg. That is light for cars producing from, say, around 250ps all the way up to over 300ps. We’re talking only the cars from the 1990s here, guys, because those are the cars I know (I’ve had a 1995 GT-4 and a 1996 STi) and also because they are in the “sweet spot” right now if you want to import a used all-wheel-drive supercar from Japan yourself. In 1986, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) disestablished the super popular Group B class after a series of major accidents at its races caused injuries and fatalities to drivers and spectators, including driver Henri Toivonen driving a Lancia Delta. For the 1987 season, Lancia and other manufacturers were forced to compete with Group A cars. Lancia decided that they would enter their trusty Lancia Delta HF 4WD and easily won the 1987 championship which increased sales in their home market and increased their name recognition abroad. Their subsequent victories in the next 5 World Rally Championships with the Lancia Delta HF made the vehicle legendary among sports car enthusiasts.

Mitsubishi released its first factory works edition for the legendary Lancer Evolution series in January 2000: the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition. The Tommi Makinen Edition, also known in some circles as the, “T.M.E” or “Evo 6.5”, was created by Mitsubishi to commemorate the record 4 consecutive WRC championships won by Mitsubishi driver Tommi Makinen. The “TomiMaki”, as the car is known in Japan, is most popular with Rally enthusiasts in the UK and Europe where many are exported to. Many more are still available to be had at Japanese auto auctions.

On the outside, the Tommi Makinen Edition had an optional special paint package, Passion Red with grey, black and white stripes, that was inspired by the Tommi Makinen WRC works car and wore the same design Enkei 17” wheels. Back in 1995, the last year of production for the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II, Lancia was kind enough to produce a very special model for the Japanese market known as the Final Edition.

As you can see from this stunning 1995 Final Edition in the hands of Japan Car Direct, it is something special indeed. The beautiful bordeaux finish is accented with two central yellow stripes running from nose to rear spoiler. The wheels are an attractive gunmetal gray. The legendary Evo II is not your average executive saloon. Mercedes-Benz was so intent on defeating BMW in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) that it took the design to extremes.

In response to FIA homologation regulations prohibiting aerodynamic enhancements beyond those on the road car, it equipped the Evo II with full-competition bodywork including massive fenders, aggressive skirts and a chin splitter low enough to mow lawns. The rear suspension was also made height adjustable for further downforce optimization.

To overcome regulations preventing any impediment of rearward vision, Mercedes raised the spoiler to unheard of heights and covered the top of the rear window to block any glimpse. Handbuilt by Renault Sport. Performance-enhanced by Porsche. The Phase 2 Clio V6 Renault Sport was the world’s most powerful mass-produced hot hatch when released in 2003.

Tom Walkinshaw Racing built the first version (Phase 1) in 2001 by reinforcing the chassis of a Renault Clio, removing its front-mounted engine and mounting a high-performance 3.0-liter V6 engine in the middle of the vehicle in place of the rear seats! This radical departure from convention increased acceleration, raised maximum speed and generated a 911esque roar from behind the front seats that is truly exhilarating.

But Renault wasn’t satisfied. In 2003, Renault Sport teamed with Porsche to further boost performance. This included modifying the 3.0-liter, 24-valve DOHC RS V6 engine to produce an additional 25 horses for a total of 255 PS at 7,150 rpm — a whole lot of muscle for a compact 3-door hatchback. The Land Cruiser, Toyota’s longest running series, has been going strong since the early 1950s when it was a jeep-like vehicle christened with a Land Rover-inspired name. Over the years, the Land Cruiser evolved into a much larger vehicle, but it never strayed from its serious off-road heritage.

Toyota launched the 80 series in early 1990 (1991 in the US) as a luxurious replacement for the aging 60 series. Its smooth lines initially disappointed off-roaders who associated boxiness with rugged design. However, the fresh styling broadened the Land Cruiser’s appeal around the globe and eventually won over enthusiasts as well.

Last and Best of the Hawkeye Imprezas When you decide to import a used Impreza WRX from Japan you are immediately confronted with quite a variety of sub types. And they are all too good cars, too. If you are looking at the first series, the "Hawkeye" Imprezas, you've got (with the 1,994cc EJ20 flat four engine) the WRX, the WRX STi, the WRX Type R, and the WRX Type RA (I'm sure there is a version that I've missed here); of the Impreza WRX STi itself there are six versions (Versions I to Version VI), and then there is the S201 subtype of STi Impreza and also the 22B subtype. The 22B comes with Subaru's 2,012cc EJ22 power unit, which is also a flat four. It's nearly the same engine as the EJ20 except that it is bored up from 92mm to 96.9mm (stroke remains the same), and it has a somewhat different power curve; it's more oriented to the lower rpm range than the EJ20 is.
