I saw several posts about Japan Car Direct and Yoshiro Nakajima. All very positive. Here is my positive post. Japan Car Direct and a good import broker on the US side made getting the little KEI truck painless. The banana is for scale.

After looking through many reviews and scouring Reddit for advice I decided to trust Japan Car Direct for my first JDM import. I could not be happier my decision! They are an awesome company that guided me through the entire process. If you are wanting to import a vehicle and don’t know who to trust, look no further than Japan Car Direct.

Mathew and the fine folks of JCD were pros and I couldn't be happier with my Honda Acty Street. Shipping was easy to follow, they laid out exactly how to go about picking up my van from customs and getting it home was a breeze. Been driving it for a few months now and still purring away. It's scary buying a vehicle sight unseen but they are willing to double check everything before you even put your bid in. The right hand drive is rad and my little baby Racoon gets quite a bit of attention. The only thing to make sure of is check your state laws. Some states are trying to pull Kei trucks and vans off the road. But that is no bearing on JCD. Everything on their end was silky smooth. Would love to buy another couple and have a whole fleet! Even came with original manuals and some artwork from the previous owner's children! Can't put into words how happy I am! JCD rules!

Matthew at JCD is the man. I’ve now imported three of my own cars through him. JCD was able to accommodate my unique needs, everything from short turn around inspections, expert opinions on bidding, arranging quick turn shipping, and handling of docs. I have no reservations sending more tens of thousands of dollars for future imports. At the end of the day, they really wanted to make me a happy customer.

I was considering importing a vehicle into Canada from Japan for a while and explored a few different companies but ultimately ended up going with JCD because of their exemplary customer service and I was not disappointed with my decision. I sent JCD about 100 emails (no lie, I wanted to be absolutely sure about the process and everything and they answered most of them prior to me committing to buy a car through them) and they responded to every single one of my questions. The purchasing process was easy and I ended up getting a nice little Mercedes for the summer. Even after JCD had finished their business with me and I was working with an importer they recommended (who was also a pleasure to work with) and I had a couple of outstanding questions they again answered me promptly, honestly and, most importantly, knowledgeably. These guys bid in the auction for you and have a mechanic inspect the car (optional for a small fee) so you know exactly what you're getting. The car I got was exactly as described to me, no surprises and had it on the road almost immediately. If you check out a lot of the other japanese exporters who have selection of cars to choose from and check the auction sheets which are often posted it's easy to see that they are trying to sell crappy cars (typically they are rated R for repaired). I cannot recommend JCD enough and I think I'll probably get my next 'daily driver' through them as well. The process was easy, they were knowledgeable and, most importantly, I got a great deal on a car.

I was daunted by the prospect of purchasing a vehicle overseas. Mathew was right there to offer direction and assurance along the way. He was quick to respond and most importantly, his word was good. Everything came to pass as he advised. The only point that went differently from his anticipation was the duty tax, which inherently has room for interpretation and may depend on the port of delivery. Would I go to Mathew and JCD again? Absolutely! With his help I obtained a suzuki carry with 8k miles, 4wd hi/lo w/ diff lock, in excellent condition, for a total of 5k from auction to driveway--tremendous value in my estimation. Thanks Mathew, the little truck is a fine addition to the farm. My kids, and my wife, love to drive it:)

It's hard to say anything that hasn't been said from other reviewers! This was my first experience importing a vehicle. Mike Nguyen was super patient with me and my indecisiveness. He was very quick to respond, and very informative on all my questions. He helped my sort through options until landing a 1kz-te Land Cruiser Prado. It ended up being in better condition than I was anticipating, and was able to drive it 5 hours home from port without a single issue. Cannot recommend Japan Car Direct enough!

Just awesome people to deal with... I started my search for a JZA80 Supra 2 years ago by just looking on JCD because I was really scared that I would go into it with the money I had, and be overwhelmed by fees and other costs, I even made a spreadsheet with every cost listed on JCD’s website. And it turns out, that feeling I was scared of never came. Mathew at JCD is a gem, he helped me from my viewing days all the way to the end, translating and giving great advice on what the steps are, making everything crystal clear and easily digestible. I always wanted a Land Cruiser ! Mathew helped me find 2 beautiful trucks from the Japanese auction. Had them delivered to Freeport, TX last week. He was amazing to work with. Without the help I got from Mason @ Japan Car Direct, I couldn't have been able to easily import my first JDM to Canada. He was very quick to respond to my emails and was patiently available day in and day out. Mason provided ongoing support to help me select the car I wanted and translated the Japanese description from the auction website. He used to record videos to explain all the available info about the cars I selected and helped me exclude the cars with features I didn't want. Mason also offered his expert advice about the maximum bidding amount but worked hard to get the car with the lowest price possible. He was amazingly dedicated to make sure I got what I wanted and patiently answered all my questions. He then helped me get extra inspections after winning the auction. I had no concern transferring money to buy and bid for the car because I know for sure that Mason and his friends at JCD are trust worthy. If I ever want to import another JDM car, Mason and his friends, Mathew and Scott are the guys that I would do business with.

Bought a Suzuki Cappuccino from auction through Mason at JCD. He was incredibly patient and helpful as I looked at dozens of cars, had several inspected, and finally the right one popped up. I just picked it up from port this week. JCD was always willing to answer all the questions I had as a first time importer.

After doing a bit of research I settled on using JCD to bid at the Japanese auctions for me and to facilitate the import of my dream car into Australia. Whenever I saw a car of interest, Mason would normally reply within an hour with a short video translating the Japanese auction sheet and additional info he had. They also organised additional inspections and photos at your request before you bid. Once I placed a winning bid, they used a partner shipping company (Dolphin shipping) and transferred all the info to them. From there the shipping company had a few extra questions and shipped my car and sent me an invoice for their services just before the car landed in AUS. These guys are very accessible, friendly and do a great job. Highly recommend. Thanks Mason for a job well done!

This is my second vehicle that Mike at Japan Car Direct has helped me import to the U.S. and the third I have been involved with. Impeccable service and if you do your homework and get the inspections on the vehicles you are interested in, you can get some great deals in Japan. The last vehicle took 1 month to arrive and 3 days to clear customs. I could not be happier with the car.

My experience was so incredible working with Japan Car Direct. It almost didn't feel real, I followed their instructions provided and was in browsing the auction database in no time at all. When I was ready I sent an email and Yoshiro worked with me almost every step of the way. I purchased my car in August and received it in early January due to several holidays over the time and a minor delay with the vehicle (ECM had a leaky capacitor, a shop repaired it and it's been good as new). I 100% suggest these guys any time someone asks about obtaining a vintage JDM car because the service is amazing and as long as you're smart about what you're buying (know how to read the auction repair sheets etc.) the cars are exactly if not better than expected. I used Japan Car Direct's services to import a Nissan Silvia from Japan to Australia. Mike was very helpful from start to finish and definitely made the process stress free. The detailed videos where Mike would translate and explain the Japanese auction sheets and inspections provided great clarification so I knew exactly what I was getting with my car. I have to also commend Mike's swiftness when it came to replying to emails and phone calls, he would always reply near on instantly and even outside of normal business hours just to ensure I was never left in the dark through the bidding and shipping preparation processes. I could not recommend JCD enough for any potential self importers!

The good people at JCD, Mason and Matt in particular, could not have been more supportive. They helped me through the auction selection process, translated a lot of auction sheets for me, and between us we successfully bid on my perfect vehicle. They walked me through getting it on a freight ship, sent me details of how to track my car halfway around the globe, also put me in touch with the right people in the UK to get my purchase through customs. They were always kind and courteous, and very understanding about the time difference issues between the UK and Japan. They always kept me up-to-date on the status of each step along the journey. All-in-all I had a really great experience dealing with them and also when adding up all the costs involved (purchase/freight/import fees/tax/registration/etc.) I got a £12k vehicle for below £7k. Super happy with the service/experience/results... would use them again in a heartbeat.

Yesterday I took delivery of my 1995 Subaru Sambar (Kei or "Mini Truck" I could not be happier with the service provided by Japan Car Direct and with the vehicle itself. Mathew was unfailingly kind, patient, and helpful through the process. He helped me to understand more about Sambars specifically and Kei trucks in general, as well as everything from bidding through shipping and customs clearance (though they do not provide that service per se). I cannot tell you how many questions he promptly answered about the process and about specific vehicles I considered purchasing. I highly recommend that anyone who wants to import a car from Japan work with Japan Car Direct.

Matt put the breaks on that and used his experience and knowledge to weed out the potential problems. I use my truck almost daily around our farm moving things and as a work surface. It is great. I purchased a JDM 2008 Toyota Prius through Japan Car Direct last year. The export agent, Mason, was easy to work with and made the process predictable and straight forward, so there were no surprises or hidden costs with the car itself and with logistics. The logistics supplier that Mason referred to in Vancouver to import the car into Canada was also very helpful and made the process stress free. Mason went above and beyond just facilitating the transaction and sourced new tires, rims, and accessories for the car that the car needed or that didn't come with the car. This was a big help as these parts and accessories for a 2008 Prius were either unavailable in Canada or would have cost an arm and a leg to purchase through a dealership. I was amazed at how good condition the car was in when it arrived. I picked it up in Vancouver and, right off the boat, drove it over 4000km straight to Ontario to get it home without any mechanical issues along the way.

What can I say? The service was friendly and good, and I got my car, which ended up being in a better condition than expected. Sure, there were couple of unforeseen snags that no-one had anticipated, but overall, it was an extremely positive experience. Based in Europe and the first time importing a car from Japan. Did my research and decided on Japan Car Direct as an agent due to their operations setup and the amount of pre-information available on their website and other resources. I knew the car I wanted and contacted them via email. I was contacted by Mike and he agreed to a call and took his time to explain all the answers to all my questions. He was extremely patient as I was changing my mind often and has loads of questions yet he did not stop keeping up the amazing customer service. I finally got a car and shipped safely with no surprises along the way. As a bonus the car was 100% as described and very happy.

Mathew at Japan Car Direct was very efficient at finding me my supercharged Subaru Sambar. The process was very simple for me. Fees were reasonable and he helped me with the paperwork and answered my hundreds of questions with patience! The hardest part was waiting as the process took a little bit to get the vehicle to port and onto a boat and then the time to come overseas. I will definitely be using Mathew and Japan Car Direct again!

Just drove my Japanese market 1991 Mercedes 300d to work for first time. Picked up from the dock last week and the car started right up. It runs quiet, is clean and was obviously well taken care of. I checked blowby via oil filter cap, and the compression seems very good for this diesel. Scott made the process of sorting through and deciding on this car easy and enjoyable. He helped steer me away from what might have been some poorer choices (check the auction sheets!) and we finally found the right car. If looking for a quality used car, the Japanese domestic market has superior stock to choose from (the Mercedes I got, like many European cars there is even LHD). Scott is the guy to get you in to that market - very easy to talk to and quick in responding to queries.

Yoshi and team were patient in helping me find the right car (green 2016 Prius 4WD) and get me through the process. Flawless service, prompt response to communications, on delivery the car was better than expected, very close to new looking. Their recommended partners for shipping and entry into NZ were on the ball too. Highly recommended! Pro tip: don't mess around; decide exactly what you want, then bid to win.

I have already purchased 3 cars from this company and have a 4th on the way. They are very nice, extremely helpful, and work around your budget. I worked with Yoshi. He is very nice and made me a lot more comfortable with the wire transfers (after purchasing the vehicle), because let’s be honest, it is nerve racking to send money to a foreign country and have to wait several weeks for your vehicle to arrive. However, everything has gone smoothly, and they make it very easy to import the car of your dreams. I will continue to go with Japan Car Direct for all my japan car needs :D

I asked Japan Car Direct to sell my old Rav4J just before I left Japan in September. Got almost $2,000 total for it, which was amazing. In Japan, there is ZERO resale value for cars. In fact, when I "sold" my old Eunos Roadster (Miyata) to a resale place, the said they were being generous giving me $50 for it. So actually getting a VERY fair price for my old car from JCD definitely put a smile on my face. So thanks for that, guys!

Like Drew, I too can be a difficult customer, as well as a skeptic, but I must say that Matt was truly fantastic and patient with me. He found a Honda Kei truck that is perfect for what we needed for our business. First time purchasing a car of my choice. JCD were absolutely brilliant. Initially, I was unsure of what exactly I wanted (Make, age, colour, mileage). I was more certain of what I did not want! Mason, my guide, was patient, even for the silliest questions, and eventually we whittled the choice down and then the acquisition of said car. R-line Polo 4 years old. Mason did all the necessary, buying and shipping, including all the paperwork! Fantastic. So now my beautiful Polo is residing in my garage awaiting the DVLA! The buying and the importation went like clockwork, thanks to JCD and Mason specifically. As soon as I get it on the road I will post pictures!

I probably looked at 100+ different trucks and Taylor was instrumental in helping me make informed decisions on which trucks I should try to bid on and which ones I should probably avoid. I ended up purchasing three mini-trucks, one for myself and two other family members. We love them!!!! Great for working around the farm or yard, hunting, taking to the mountains and cruising the back mountain roads or just a daily commuter as I use mine for. If you are looking to import any vehicle from Japan, I would highly recommend the friendly and knowledgeable staff at JCD.

Japan Car Direct review TLDR: These guys are great to work with and 100% trustworthy. If you are going to import a vehicle, you aren’t going to find better people to manage the process. Importing a car is a gearhead rite of passage into the upper echelon of status and street cred. Spoken of in hushed tones in closely gathered circles almost always in terms of “someday.” It always seemed like dating a move star to me; I knew it was technically a thing. But the in-roads to achieve it were shrouded in darkness and mystery. Besides, even if you managed to sneak into the smoky back room where the action happened, what then? What you need is a Obi-Wan. A wise guide with the patina of years and experience under their belt - funky robe and weird smells optional. Enter Japan Car Direct. I was admittedly nervous. I had spent days reading reviews and references. I contacted several companies in speed-dating fashion hoping to find someone to put my nervous mind at ease. With what I am sure was an annoying number of emails, it seemed clear to me Japan Car Direct was the smartest route. Their reputation seemed solid and they handled my naive, kid-with-an-inhaler-and-too-much-emotional-investment-in-an-obscure-SiFi-storyline obsessive questions with grace and patience. They walked me through the process. Broke down the completely reasonable charges into terms even I could manage, and took the time to expediently respond to my flurry of electronic “But, what about”s. When things got serious, they treated me like more of a friend they were doing a solid than a client. I would message them daily about cars I found on the auction listing I thought would scratch my strange itch. They always responded quickly with honest opinions and information. I had sent my deposit. They had my money. It would have been in their financial interest to get me out of the virtual door with the first car I was panting about and move on to the next client. But, they didn’t do that at all. They actually talked me out of 4-5 vehicles before we found one that fit the bill and they felt was a good option. Then, for less than I’ve spent on a single Starbucks run, then had someone go and put hands on the vehicle. Check it out, start it, fiddle with things and make sure it was a good bet. I received a optimistic, but reserved assessment. Which I jumped on like a high schooler on a prom date. I wired money. I screwed it up (research what is actual takes to send significant amounts of money overseas before you try, btw. It isn’t hard, but I really wish I thought of that part before. It was a bit of a mad dash because I was a newbie and totally clueless.) They were very understanding about the whole thing. They made arrangements, got the car to and on the boat. Managed strange and exotic paperwork that I had no clue existed. It all felt very Bourgeois. Like I had people in other countries managing my affairs. The vehicle magically arrived and it was so much better than I expected. Their standards exceeded mine. Honestly, after purchasing and having a vehicle imported with Japan Car Direct, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. It is much easier than I expected and less expensive than I assumed. They are fantastic to work with and the entire experience was great.

The entire team at Japan Car Direct looked after everything for me. From buying my target car at auction to selling my current car at auction with delivery, paperwork and admin in between sales all included. I live in Japan so this is a review of the process from within the country (not for export). Having said this, the high quality of car and service received won't be different no matter where you are buying from. At first Matt educated me on Land Cruisers as that was my target car. This was very helpful. Next he helped me select a car. Our primary communication was done via social media (we mostly used Whatsapp but also were connected via Facebook Messenger and LINE). We looked at a fair amount of cars. Matt would send me a list almost daily of upcoming cars. He was especially patient with me as I was rather pedantic about everything and asked many questions. Matt always responded within an hour. It is also worth noting that even though my Japanese language ability is advanced, it was comforting having Matt's Japanese language fluency on hand when questions needed to be relayed on my behalf. It made our communication much more efficient. Within a couple of weeks we eventually found a car that fit my target but actually missed out on the auction, not because we were outbid (although there were other bidders) but because the seller had a fixed (minimum) price set. After the auction Matt relayed the fixed price the seller wanted. I waited a few days to think about it then asked if the car was still available, and it was. At this point Matt offered to hire a private inspector/specialist to check the car on site on my behalf. This was 3000yen well spent as the inspector gave a thorough check of the car. I recommend anyone considering buying a car via auction to have an expert check it out first. It was tremendously valuable and reassuring. At this point, all that was left to do was agree to buy the car and send the money. All the paperwork and delivery of the car (directly to my home!) was organized by Matt and the Japan Car Direct team. It was a very easy process. To top it off, Matt and the Japan Car Direct team went above and beyond by agreeing to help me sell my old car. They arranged to have it picked up from my home on the day my new car arrived, and took it to auction to sell it on my behalf. My car sold on the first auction day for much more than I was hoping for. Once again, all of the paperwork, delivery of the car etc was taken care of by Matt and the team. I have bought cars and motorcycles in Japan via auction in the past. While the product I buy has always been good, the service not always so. The entire process can be a nerve wracking experience, not only because of fear of buying a bad car but because of all the paperwork and bureaucracy involved. Japan Car Direct took the stress out of buying at auction and made it a friendly, fun experience. The service was prompt and professional - always. I love the car I purchased but since the process was so easy I will certainly be back for more in the future. Japan Cars Direct is THE way to go for buying cars at auction in Japan. I can’t recommend them enough. I was initially introduced to Matthew Matusiak of Japan Car Direct via a mutual acquaintance for the purpose of buying a car, however, I am pleased to now call Matt my friend and look forward to continued hockey chatter throughout the year.
