Solid German engineering, BMW prestige and open-air motoring pleasure come together in this JDM German sports car with distinctive head-turning looks — a 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster sourced by Japan Car Direct.
The long nose and gills were somewhat controversial among enthusiasts when this model first came out. But I have always agreed with James Bond movie producers who featured this model in GoldenEye that this car is absolutely beautiful.
Finished in silver with a power convertible top and 16-inch alloy wheels, this JDM vehicle is in exceptionally good condition like most used BMWs we handle in Japan. Inside, every detail from black leather seats and steering wheel to classic meters is impeccably crafted, handsomely designed and well cared for.
The seats are exceptionally comfortable and there is enough space for adults of average size to stretch out. There isn’t a lot of luggage space, but you can store things in the trunk and behind the seats.
BMW’s fuel-injected 1.9-liter inline-four DOHC engine (M44B19) with aluminum head and dual length intake manifold produces 103 kW (138 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 180 N⋅m (133 lb⋅ft) at 4,300 rpm for plenty of mid-range power. Mated with a 5-speed Getrag 250 manual transmission that feels tight and sporty, it propels the Z3 Roadster from zero to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and offers decent fuel efficiency.
For most drivers, the acceleration is ample for spirited driving pleasure. But hardcore enthusiasts may prefer the more aggressive 2.8-liter engine that is also available. Both engines are reliable and trouble-free when properly serviced. Moreover, many parts are shared with the 3-Series and easy to find.
The fully independent suspension, also borrowed from the 3 Series, supplies well-balanced handling and a comfortable ride. Maneuverability is excellent for easy parking and u-turns; traction control combines with a limited-slip differential to keep the vehicle glued to the road; and four disc brakes with ABS ensure ample braking power and control.
The experts at Japan Car Direct found the 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster a fun car to drive, especially with the top down. In addition to catching the eye of every passerby, it is starting to attract the attention of collectors. So it might not be a bad investment in the long run.
We can source the JDM 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster with a 1.9 or 2.8-liter engine and 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Later models with more powerful engines up to 3.0-liters are also available with our assistance through Japanese used car auctions. A third option with similar appeal is the 2000 BMW M Coupe (E36), which we also highly recommend.
